Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag

That awkward moment when you were tagged to do a tag over a month ago.

So, Erika tagged me in her post. At the end of June. And I’m just now doing this tag. Almost halfway through August. Oops. But hey, better late than never?Β I seem to say that a lot lately. Maybe it only counts if you’re not over a month behind like I am. Who knows.

I’m pretty sure I did this last year, but I’m not sure. Basically this is a bunch of questions talking about your reading life in the first half of the year. I’m going to make this extra difficult for myself by actually following the rules, and limiting myself to one book for each answer. πŸ˜›

Let’s dive in!

1. What’s the best book you’ve read in 2017 so far?

In case you don’t follow me on my social media, I’ve found a new obsession. A new favorite series of all-time. I love all three currently-released books in the His Fair Assassin series, but I chose Grave Mercy because it’s the first. If you haven’t picked up this book, do it! πŸ˜‰

2. What was your favorite sequel so far?

If I could put all the Bloodlines books as an answer, I would. But I think my favorite would have to be The Ruby Circle, because after all the action it has a perfect ending. And I absolutely loved all the time Rose and Dimitri spent with Sydney and Adrian!

3. What’s a new release you haven’t read yet but want to?

Basically all of them. I’m so behind. But one I really want to get to is Tash Hearts Tolstoy, because the main character is asexual just like I am. πŸ˜‰

4. What’s your most anticipated release for the second half of the year?

There’s so many! This is difficult. I would say Immortal Reign by Morgan Rhodes, the final Falling Kingdoms book, but that got pushed back to February 2018. So instead, I’ll go with The Becoming of Noah Shaw. You all know how much I loved the Mara Dyer trilogy when I read it last year, so I can’t wait for this. πŸ˜€

5. What’s your biggest disappointment so far?

This one is, unfortunately, very easy: Windwitch by Susan Dennard. I loved Truthwitch to pieces when I read it last summer, but sadly I found the sequel boring. 😦

6. What was your biggest surprise so far?

Definitely Girl on the Verge by Pintip Dunn! I got an eARC from Netgalley and I thought it sounded cool, but it completely blew me away. It’s one of my new favorite thrillers, and I can’t recommend it enough!

7. Favorite debut or new to you author?

Victoria/V.E. Schwab! She’s definitely not a debut author, but before this year I hadn’t read anything she’d written. Now I’ve read and really enjoyed five of her books and am eager to read more.

8. Who’s your new fictional crush?

I don’t know if I’d say he’s a crush, but I love Monty from The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue! And even if he was a crush, I wouldn’t want to get in the way of him and Percy. Maybe Felicity, though, since she’s amazing and seems to be asexual. πŸ˜‰

9. Who’s your new favorite character?

Dimple from When Dimple Met Rishi! I mean, come on. How could I not love a girl that threw her iced coffee at a guy? πŸ˜›

10. What book has made you cry?

This one is a bit more complicated. No book has ever made me cry, though several have broken my heart and crushed my soul. But one book brought me close, so I’m using that one for this answer.Β It was so hard to not use this for best sequel, but I wanted to save it for this question.

11. What book has made you happy?

Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde! I read this in one sitting. I did nothing except update Goodreads until I finished. Not only was it a great fluff book, but it featured an amazing friendship and was very diverse! πŸ™‚

12. Favorite book to movie adaptation?

The live-action Beauty and the Beast, hands down! This is sort of cheating, but whatever. I loved the movie and I haven’t seen any other adaptations anyway.Β Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―

13. Favorite review you’ve written?

I don’t really have a favorite, though I do like what I wrote for The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli. Mainly because of the quote I included, and in my opinion, it’s the perfect length.Β Can you tell I’m grasping at straws here? You can read my review on my Goodreads.

14. Most beautiful book you’ve bought?

*tries to remember what I’ve bought* Oh! I know! A couple of weeks ago I bought my first Barnes and Noble classic edition, and it’s gorgeous!Β Even though my cat has chewed holes in the leather. And it has silver stained pages! *heart eyes*

15. What are some books you really want to read in the second half of the year?

There are a lot, but I’m going to go with More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera. At the end of 2016 I made a list of popular books I wanted to read this year, and that’s the only one I haven’t gotten to yet. I enjoyed History is All You Left Me when I read it last month, so I’m hoping MHTN will be just as good!

I don’t know who to tag, since my best friend is the one that tagged me. So, if you want to do this, I tag you! πŸ˜‰

What’s your favorite book you’ve read so far this year? Were any surprising or disappointing to you? Do you agree with any of my answers? Let’s chat! I’d love to know! πŸ™‚

I’m off to continue reading Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy and, most likely, get distracted by Splatoon 2 videos. πŸ˜› I hope you all have a fabulous day/night! ❀

Until next time…

  1. Sounds like you had a great start to the year! Many of these books are on my TBR, but I did really enjoy the Beauty and the Beast film adaptation! I hope you get to all the books you want to read for the rest of the year ☺️

    1. I want to read Vicious! I loved the Shades of Magic trilogy and the Monsters of Verity duology. I hope you enjoy them when you get to them! 😁❀️

  2. I’m the same in that I don’t cry at books, but the only two books to make me cry are The Outsiders by SE Hinton and More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera. Also, I read This Savage Song recently and was wondering if you would recommend the Shades of Magic trilogy?

    1. The Outsiders was so heartbreaking! I need to read MHTN. And yes, all of Victoria’s books that I’ve read were amazing! I loved Shades of Magic, and also Our Dark Duet if you still have to read that. 😁❀️
