Bon vendredi, guys! That means “happy Friday” in French, in case you didn’t know. What can I say? I’m obsessed with French. 🙂
But anyway, I can ramble more about my new obsession with foreign languages in my upcoming MMM. This post is all about books that disappointed me. Some of these are very popular and loved, so if you love them, that’s great. Just be respectful of my opinions. 😉
I don’t think much more of an explanation is needed, so I’ll just dive right in!
Reviews for each book on this book will be linked. I’m going to warn you now, though, some of them are old and far from my best work.
1. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater // review
Everyone, their unicorn, and their raven (see what I did there?) has read this book. 98% of them adore it, but unfortunately I’m in the rare 2%. I read to the halfway point, and I hadn’t been hooked by the story or any of the characters. I ended up not finishing it, and to be honest, it’s one of the only things I’m ever nervous to tell other people online. >.<
2. The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken // review
I didn’t finish this book either, and it’s the other big thing I’m apprehensive to tell others about. I got this over the summer, when I had nothing I really had to do, and it took me 4 days to get halfway through. I only really liked a single character, and the plot felt super slow. *_*
3. The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa // review
This book is actually the second in The Iron Fey series, and I remember enjoying the first one just enough to continue. Once again, I didn’t finish it. It also felt like it dragged, and that the love triangle took center stage, so to speak. 😐
4. The Rose Society by Marie Lu // review
I remember really enjoying the first book in The Young Elites trilogy, and being excited to finally get this from the library since the release of the final book was rapidly approaching. To me, this book had serious second book slump, especially after seeing how much everyone on Instagram and Twitter loved it. I liked one character.
5. Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell // review
I read this nearly a year ago, and in my review I gave it a high rating and praised it. Since then, I’ve reflected and read other reviews, and it really isn’t as good as Past Olivia thought. I just think more could’ve been done with this book. I won’t go into what, specifically, since I have no desire to start any drama. 😉
6. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz // review
I think I read a different book, to be honest. This is one of the most popular contemporaries I’ve seen around the online bookish community, and for me it fell flat. Of the two main characters, I liked one and found the other very irritating. I also thought the big idea of the story was more of a side element. 😐
7. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir // review
The sequel to this book was a lot of people’s most anticipated release of the year, and although in my review I said I’d likely give it a try, I’ve decided against it. AEITA didn’t draw me in the way it did everyone else, and I remember seeing a lot of similarities between it and Legend by Marie Lu.
And that wraps up this post!
Have you read any of these books? Are any on your TBR? What are some books that disappointed you? I’d love to know! Tell me in the comments! 🙂
I’m off to have dinner and binge-read Empire of Storms and Last Sacrifice! I’m exactly 251 pages into both books, and they’re both absolutely fantastic! 😀 I hope you all have a fabulous day/night! ❤
Until next time…
I was disappointed with An a Ember too!! But I still bought A Torch so I’m hoping it will be better! I also have The Darkest minds on my shelf waiting for me to read! So hopefully I will enjoy it more!!

Not gonna lie it pains me a little to see when people don’t like the Raven Boys, but I totally understand 🙂 and I agree, sometimes it’s hard to say we don’t like a book that are so well loved. But it’s so good to have different point of views about the books we read! I haven’t read the other ones on your list, but I’m interested in reading An Ember in the Ashes and Eleanor and Park, I hope I would enjoy them more ^_^

Rainbow Rowell is one of my favourite authors ever, I can’t believe she’s on your list! I haven’t read most of the other ones you mentioned, and I’m always wary when people mention not liking books on my TBR… I’ll try not to get my hopes up 🙂

I loved the Legend trilogy by Marie Lu so intrigued to read The Young Elites as well as now, The Ember in the Ashes. I usually wait for the hype to die down with books like that so I don’t know in expecting much, that way I know I will enjoy the books more!

I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who didn’t enjoy The Raven Boys as much as everyone else. I thought I was the only one.

I thought I was the only one too. I’m glad I’m not though. 😉 😁

I’m with you with “An Ember in the Ashes”. I never finished the book, because it just didn’t grab me. But with the hype surrounding the second book, it is making me reconsider the first book and attempt it again.

I did finish it, but I can’t say I understood the hype. If you pick it up again, I hope you enjoy it more! 😁🙄

I also didn’t find Raven Boys so special, but I’ve listened to an audiobook and this might’ve been the issue

Honestly I wasn’t offended by you not like any of these books! If it were ACOMAF or something I wouldn’t said whaaaaaat? Then looked at you with one eye while swelling up like a disgruntled cat. Detailed, but true! I felt sort of meh about all of these. I haven’t read the Raven Boys, nor has my unicorn because he’s a faithful little spiked marshmallow, 🙂 but I’m planning to and hopefully I feel differently even though I agreed with you on most of these books!

I’m glad you understand! 😉 haha, I agree with you about ACOMAF. I would respect if someone didn’t like it but be really wary like you said. XD I hope you and your unicorn enjoy The Raven Boys when you get to reading it! 💙
